Softball Drops Final Game Versus FIU
3/13/2022 1:52:00 PM | Softball
MIAMI- The UAB softball team fell 1-0 Sunday morning in the final game of a three-game series versus FIU.
The Blazers (14-10, 2-1) played solid defense and pitched well all game long, but were unable to get things going at bat, and ultimately got shut out.
UAB went three up-three down in its first turn at bat, and so did FIU (15-12, 1-2). The Blazers didn't get a hit in the second inning, and FIU got a runner across home plate in the bottom of the second, recording the game's only run.
UAB got a runner on base in the top of the third, but Lauren Brock was caught stealing at second to end the scoring opportunity.
The offensive deadlock continued through the next three innings, with neither team able to get anyone home.
The Blazers had their best opportunity to score in the top of the sixth, when Bella Wiggins got on base with a single, Tyler Armistead walked, and Faith Hegh reached on a single. Despite the loaded bases and just one out, Wiggins was thrown out at home, and Mackenzie Droddy was grounded out to end the Blazer's chance at bat.
The Panthers fought hard to add to the lead in the bottom of the sixth, but the Blazer defense remained strong, and prevented any runs despite a triple from FIU.
UAB had one final chance to score in the top of the seventh, but couldn't get home, despite getting two runners on base with a Jolie Readeaux single, and an error by FIU.
Sarah Cespedes (7-2) was given the loss despite a performance that saw her strikeout five FIU batters and allow only one run over 4.2 innings pitched.
