BIRMINGHAM- The UAB track & field team had a strong showing this weekend at the 2022 C-USA Indoor Championships. Anna Massa broke a C-USA record in the pole vault, and several other Blazers turned in quality performances.
DAY 1
On the first day of competition, Massa's record was the top attraction. She and another athlete from the University of Charlotte broke the pole vault record, and Massa ended the day on the podium with a silver medal.
"We had a lot of amazing things happen today." Said Coach Kurt Thomas. "Along with those things, we missed the mark in some events and didn't come away with the points we expected. Makiyah Sills and Kat Duren qualifying for the 60m hurdle final was great. They'll have a chance to score points tomorrow. Maira Gauges scored good points at 6th in the Pentathlon. The DMR scratched out a point. Of course, Anna was the highlight today! It was an amazing vault competition with 4 girls jumping at a conference record. Anna and the other athlete from Charlotte cleared it and set the new record at 4.26. It's a new school record for UAB and tied the new C-USA Championship record. "
DAY 2
On championship Sunday, the Blazers, who hosted the meet all weekend, turned in a strong performance, and ended the day at 9th overall in Conference USA. Coach Thomas said, "Our team had a lot of great things happen this weekend. We ended with lots of PRs and seasonal bests. We missed some points in some events that we thought we could get. We challenged the girls to step up and compete in the moment and the girls responded today. Birthe Franck-Petersen scored in the shot put. Kat and Mak stepped up big to score points in the hurdles. Lauren Robinson and Lauren Thompson had good 3k PRs to finish off the day."
Birthe Franck-Petersen placed 8th overall among 29 others in the women's shot put. Makiyah Sills placed 5thin the 60m hurdles, and Kat Duren placed second overall and captured a silver medal. Maira Gauges placed 6th overall in the women's pentathlon.
Head Coach Kurt Thomas said, "We fell short of our overall goals, but a few podium finishes, a CUSA record and lots of PRs make it worth it."
