UAB Softball Releases 2023 Schedule

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB Softball Team enters a new era with high expectations for the 2023 Season. The Blazers, who welcomed new head coach AJ Daugherty, starts a strong campaign for the 2023 year with 26 opportunities to see the Green in Gold in action at home.
"We are very excited to get going in the spring and have set a schedule to prepare us for a special season," said Daugherty. "We open up at the Cowgirl Classic with a solid group of teams. After that, we host some quality teams in our events and it will be a lot of fun."
The Blazers finished third in C-USA West in 2022, where they tallied a 13-10 conference record and a 25-24 overall record; the Green and Gold saw an All-Conference and All-Freshman Team honor in Sierra Frazier and Lindsey Smith respectively.
UAB starts 2023 at the McNeese State Cowgirl Classic, playing the Central Arkansas Bears and Texas Southern Tigers on Feb 10. Both teams held the No. 1 slot in their respective conferences (ASUN, SWAC). UAB will remain in Lake Charles until Feb. 12 before hosting their first of two tournaments with the Blazer Bash.
In the 2023 UAB Blazer Bash, the Blazers host Belmont, Lindenwood, Ball State and Samford from Feb. 16 to 19. The Green and Gold have their first time meeting with the Lindenwood Lions, who have held membership in the Division II circuit for over a decade. The Blazers also take on cross-town rival Samford to conclude the Blazer Bash on Feb. 19.
The Blazers then travel to Auburn in their first of four SEC matchups against the Auburn Tigers on Feb. 22.
UAB follows up with the Green & Gold Classic from Feb. 24 to 26, where they welcome Butler, Cleveland State, and University of Louisiana Monroe at Mary Bowers Field.
Following the Green & Gold Classic, the Blazers host Florida and Alabama to kick off the month of March. The Blazers take on Florida starting March 3 through March 5. The last meeting between the Gators and Blazers goes back to 2018, and this will be the first time UAB will host Florida at Mary Bowers Field.
After the Florida weekend series, UAB meets with Alabama March 8. Between the Blazers and Crimson Tide, the two have met over 20 times in the 23 years of UAB Softball's existence.
"We are looking forward to competing in nine contests against SEC programs. Our schedule features 12 games against 2022 NCAA Tournament Participants including hosting a weekend series against WCWS participant Florida," said Daugherty. "We hope the community and Blazer fans will come out to support our team that has worked hard this fall to prepare for this thrilling 2023 slate."
UAB then enters conference play March 10 against Florida Atlantic before traveling to take on the Tennessee State Lady Tigers. They return to C-USA action against Middle Tennessee the weekend of March 17. Following their meeting with MTSU, the Blazers compete against the former top two teams in the C-USA West: North Texas and Louisiana Tech.
UNT, the reigning 2022 C-USA Champions, had a NCAA Super Regional debut in the 2022 Women's College World Series. The Blazers follow up meeting another Super Regional participant as they travel to face SEC Regular season Champion Arkansas on April 14 through 16.
Rounding out the final weeks of the schedule, UAB travels to the Lone Star State for a matchup at UTSA before returning back to the Magic City to face UTEP. They close the regular season in the Queen City to take on Charlotte May 5 through 7.
The Green and Gold will roll into the C-USA Softball Championships starting May 10 in Ruston, hosted by Louisiana Tech.
