SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS
Louisiana Tech comes into the 2022 season at 9-11, with an identical record to the Blazers in conference play. Last season, the Bulldogs were 9-19 overall and 1-11 in conference play, where they closed out the previous year, dropping both matches to UAB. They would not see postseason play in their 2021 campaign.
Entering this season, the Bulldogs welcome critical players to their roster, such as Andrea Spasojevic. Spasojevic, who leads the team in kills, comes from Odessa Junior College, where she finished her sophomore season with 296, leading her former squad to a 26-4 record. On the defensive, McKenzie Johnson leads the team as the Bulldogs' libero, where she headlines the stat sheet in skills with 316. Johnson totaled a season-high of 37 digs in LA Tech's match against Northwestern State, where the Bulldogs would fall in the fifth set.
LA Tech has five athletes in the Top 10 for four statistical categories in the conference. The Bulldogs are ranked seventh in blocks, fifth in service aces, and fourth in digs. Their Achilles heel comes in hitting percentage on the opposing side, ranked tenth out of eleven teams. The Bulldogs additionally allow their opponents to tally up an average of 12.88 digs per set.
Stacking up against the Blazers, UAB has won the past four matches against the Bulldogs. Of the four matches, the Blazers have only dropped one set.
QUOTES FROM BETSY FREEBURG
"We've got to manage better in bad situations. Last night, we made too many attacking errors when we could have had an advantage. We will look to build off the defensive effort we gave yesterday and work to continue to work on siding out as we did in sets one and two of last night."
"We are focusing on ourselves and what we can control. We have a solid game plan, and we feel like if we approach the match with discipline, we will find success. We are focusing on how we can be our best for each point and staying focused on the process, when we do that, the outcome will take care of itself."
