UAB Men’s Soccer Grabs First Win in AAC

BIRMINGHAM – UAB Men's Soccer (3-7-2, 1-3-2 AAC) used a second-half surge to pick up the school's first win as a member of the American Athletic Conference. The Blazers scored all three of their goals in the second half to keep UCF (5-5, 2-4 AAC) at bay in the 3-1 victory.

After an uneventful first half that saw only six total shots from either side, the Blazers picked up the pace shortly after the break. A penalty kick in the 57th minute gave UAB the first opportunity to take the lead. Nathaniel St. Louis found the bottom left corner of the goal to stay perfect from the spot on the season and give the Blazers the 1-0 lead.

UAB looked to take control of the game only a few minutes later. Brooks Rice found a dangerous spot on the box and got the ball over to Curtis DeLeon. DeLeon used his left foot to find the back of the net to double the Blazers' advantage.

The Knights cut into the UAB lead with just over 15 minutes to go. A dangerous cross into the box deflected off a UAB defender and found its way into the goal to make it 2-1 for UAB.

Only five minutes later, Mayno Linares sent in a dangerous shot at the top of the box. The UCF keeper made the save but could not hold on and Gal Ben Dayan was there to clean it up, putting the lead at 3-1 with just over 10 minutes remaining.

The Blazers earn their first win as a member of the AAC.
UAB picks up its first win since Aug. 28 against Queens.
Both Curtis DeLeon and Gal Ben Dayan each scored their first goals at UAB.
UCF finished with more corner kicks (10) than shots (9).
The Blazers are only the second team to score three goals in one game against UCF in 2022.
UAB snapped Lucca Dourado's seven-game scoring streak.
The Blazers lead the all-time series 9-1-1 over the Knights.
