Kohan Paces Blazers in Opening Weekend of Spring Competition

MURRAY, Ky. and MARTIN, Tenn. – Amy Kohan set a season-high individual aggregate score in consecutive matches as UAB opened its spring season at Murray State and UT-Martin over the weekend.
At Murray State
Boosted by strong efforts from Amy Kohan, Sophia Flores and Maggie Vonderau, UAB posted a season-high smallbore score of 2,272 and its second-best season aggregate score of 4,572 in Friday's match at Murray State. The Blazers, however, finished fifth out of five teams in an invitational full of nationally-ranked competitors.
Kohan led the Blazers in all three categories, posting 577 points in smallbore, tying a season-high with 585 points in air rifle and finished with a season-high aggregate score of 1,162 points.
Sophia Flores finished second on the team in air rifle and individual aggregate with 583 points and 1,152 points, respectively, as well as third in smallbore with 569 points.
Maggie Vonderau finished second on the team in smallbore with a season-high 571 points and third in air rifle with 575 points. She also placed third on the team with an individual aggregate score of 1,146 points, which is just shy of her season-high of 1,148 points.
Blake Wingard posted a season-best in smallbore with 552 points.
Kentucky won the competition with 4,741 points over Murray State by 17 points.
At UT Martin
Despite another standout performance from Kohan, UAB dropped Saturday's match at UT-Martin 4,598-4,548 to the Skyhawks.
Kohan once again led the Green and Gold in all three categories with scores of 573 in the smallbore, 589 in the air rifle and 1,162 in the combined individual aggregate score. Kohan's 1,162 overall points ranked first among all competitors on Saturday, scoring six more points than UT-Martin's Nicholas Fares. Kohan's tally of 589 in the air rifle was a season-high.
Jordan Blankenship (1,134), Flores (1,128) and Vonderau (1,124) rounded out the Blazers in the Top 10 of Saturday's individual aggregate standings. Blankenship posted a season-best score in air rifle with 580 points and a season-high aggregate score of 1,134 points.

The Blazers will travel to Spartanburg, South Carolina, for a dual match at Wofford on Saturday. UAB defeated Wofford 4,547-3,243 on Oct. 30 at the Terriers' Taylor Center Rifle Range.
