BIRMINGHAM- The UAB track and field team performed well today in the Samford Invitational. Julianne Manning and Trinity Fellows had their best pole vaults of the season, (3.26m each) three Blazers turned in solid times in the mile run, and several other athletes competed well on a chilly day in the Birmingham CrossPlex.
"Overall we had a solid day." Said Coach Kurt Thomas. "The throwers really started out well, with Birthe Franck-Petersen almost matching a school record and Rosalind Staie throwing well. The vaulters also had good days with several season bests by Juli and Trinity and good jumps for Anna Massa and a PR. The distance crew, Kathleen Schellman, Britney Johnson and Gracie Sears knocked several seconds off their mile and 3ks. We still have lots of work to do in all areas. We're proud of how every competed. We'll get back to work this week and get ready for our meets in Boston."
Anna Massa turned in the second best jump in the women's pole vault, at 3.91m. Kaylie Wright placed second overall in the women's long jump at 5.80m. Birthe Franck-Petersen approached a school record with a 13.33m throw in the shot put. Laci Tuner and Laney Kronz participated in events yesterday, at the Samford Multi.
The Blazers will be competing next in Massachusetts at the Harvard Crimson Elite on February 4, and the Boston University Scarlet and White on February 5.
