UAB Rifle Opens Spring Season Against Murray State, UT-Martin

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB rifle team will kick off the spring portion of its 2021-22 season when the Blazers travel to Murray State on Friday and to UT-Martin on Saturday.
The Blazers will send six student-athletes to this weekend's road matches – Sophia Flores, Amy Kohan, Maggie Vonderau, Jordan Blankenship, Tommy Loring, and Blake Wingard.
In their final match before the New Year, the Blazers traveled to Jacksonville State, where they recorded a season-high aggregate score of 4,578. Flores, Kohan and Vonderau paced the Blazers with individual aggregate scores of 1,156, 1,155, and 1,136, respectively. UAB's smallbore score of 2,263 and air rifle score of 2,315 were both season-highs.
Murray State is coming off two wins this past weekend against UT-Martin and at Jacksonville State. Murray State defeated the Gamecocks by 43 points as junior Matias Kiuru led the Racers' travel squad with an individual aggregate score of 1,181 points. The Racers also defeated UT-Martin at home as freshman Andrew Duryea led the home squad with an individual aggregate score of 1,175.
UT-Martin kicked off its spring season this past weekend at Murray State where they fell to the Racers by 26 points. UT-Martin's aggregate score of 4,602 was a season-high. Redshirt senior Jennifer Plocinik was the Skyhawks' highest finisher, placing second overall with an individual aggregate score of 1,164 points.
Following this weekend's matches, the Blazers will travel to Spartanburg, South Carolina, for a match at Wofford. UAB defeated Wofford 4,547-3,243 on Oct. 30 at the Terriers' Taylor Center Rifle Range.
