Volleyball Adds Two Key Transfers

BIRMINGHAM- The UAB Volleyball team is adding two new members to its ranks, in the form of transfer outside hitters, Katy Schroeder from Snead State Community College, and Maia Rackel by way of UT Chattanooga.
KATY SCHROEDER | OUTSIDE HITTER | HUNTSVILLE, ALABAMA
Schroeder comes to UAB after a successful career at Snead State CC, where she was named 1st Team All ACCC in 2021, as well as 2021 NJCAA Gulf Atlantic District A/B All Tournament Team. Coach Betsy Freeburg said, "We cannot wait to get in the gym with Katy. She is a player that came to the sport late and fell in love with the game. She has high aspirations and is hungry to get better. Her best volleyball is ahead of her, and we are so happy she is a Blazer!"
Katy will be a General Studies major at UAB.
MAIA RACKEL | OUTSIDE HITTER | SIGNAL MOUNTAIN, TENNESSEE
Maia Rackel arrives at UAB after a decorated career at UT Chattanooga. Rackel was All-Southern Conference Second Team in 2021, SoCon Offensive Player of the Week, named to the 2020-21 Dean's List and Athletic Director's Honor Roll, the 2020-21 Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll, 2020-21 Southern Conference All-Academic Team, the 2019 Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll, 2019 Athletic Director's Honor Roll, 2018 Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll, 2018 Dean's List, and Athletic Director's Honor Roll. "Maia comes to UAB after a great career at UTC, where she initially came in as a middle and developed into a 6-rotation pin." Said Coach Freeburg. "She is a very skilled volleyball player, and her versatility and maturity are going to provide us a lot of options and depth in multiple positions."
Maia loves to bake and will pursue grad studies in Higher Education.
