UAB Volleyball Edged Out by Kennesaw State in Five

BIRMINGHAM — In a tough five set battle, the UAB volleyball team fell 3-2 (25-21, 25-21, 21-25, 17-25, 12-15) against Kennesaw State Sunday afternoon at Bartow Arena.
Fernanda Maida led the Blazers' offense with a season-high 22 kills, followed by Alex Kells (14) and Sam Gomez (13). Setter Grace Koper assisted on a season-high 25 kills. As a team, UAB (1-3) out blocked Kennesaw State 11.0-10.0.
Set one saw KSU (3-2) jump out to a 7-1. The Blazers battled back to get within two points and force an Owl timeout. Coming out of the break, UAB took 10 of the last 14 points to win the set 25-21.
The Green and Gold continued its scoring run by opening up set two 4-1. Kennesaw State tied it up a 14 a piece, but UAB closed out the set 25-21.
The teams tallied 14 kills each in the third set. However, KSU's two service aces powered them to the set three win 25-21. The fourth set was all Kennesaw State 25-17, tying the match at two sets each 25-17.
Both teams battled hard in the fifth set with seven lead changes and eight ties, but Kennesaw State closed out the reverse sweep with a 15-12 set five win.
Up next, UAB travels to Fort Collins, Colo. for the Ram Volleyball Classic hosted by Colorado State, Sept. 10-11. The tournament schedule and information can be seen by visiting the UAB schedule page.
