UAB Opens with Two Wins at Ram Volleyball Classic

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — The UAB volleyball team opened up the Ram Volleyball Classic with two wins. The Blazers (3-3) defeated Oregon State in three sets and battled SIUE in four sets for the 3-1 victory.
UAB 3, Oregon State 0 (26-24, 25-23, 25-21)
The Blazers secured its first ever win over a Pac-12 opponent in a three-set sweep of the Beavers.
Fernanda Maida (13) and Alex Kells (12) led the offense with 25 combined kills. As a team, UAB hit .333, including a .394 mark in the first set.
The Blazers opened up the first set taking five of the first eight points. Oregon State came back to tie it up at 17. Kells sealed the 26-24 win on her fourth kill of the set.
In a back-and-forth second set that saw four ties, the Blazers were able to come up with the 25-23. Kell continued her hitting streak connecting on six out of 10 attempts in the set.
The Green and Gold came out strong in the third set and produced 14 kills, two blocks and three service aces to secure the 25-21 set win and complete the three-set sweep.
UAB 3, SIUE 1 (25-16, 20-25, 25-21, 25-15)
Maida recorded 19 kills during the match for a .350 hitting percentage. As a team, the Blazers recorded a season-high 10 service aces.
In the first set, UAB took six of the first seven points. The Green and Gold stayed in control during the set and the 25-16 win.
Just like the first match, the second set saw a back-and-fort battle with five ties and two lead changes. SIUE pulled out the set win 25-20.
The Blazers used a six-point run to jump out to a 9-5 lead in the third set. UAB held on for the 25-21 set three win.
UAB opened up with a 11-5 advantage in the fourth set to force an SIUE timeout. Kells was able to close out the match with her 14th kill and the 25-15 set four victory.
Up next, the Blazers will close out the Ram Volleyball Classic against host institution Colorado State on Sept. 11 at 2 p.m. CST.
