UAB Volleyball Sweeps Georgia Southern in Home Opener

BIRMINGHAM — The UAB volleyball team claimed its first win of the season in a three-set (25-20, 25-16, 25-14) sweep over Georgia Southern Friday night at Bartow Arena.
"What a way to open up on our home court," head coach Betsy Freeburg said. "It was a total team win and our setters did a great job running the offense which shows from our .371 attacking efficiency."
The Blazers (1-2) were led by the trio of Alex Kells (13), Sam Gomez (12) and Fernanda Maida (10) who accounted for 35 for the team's 45 kills on the night. Setters Lidya Canturk and Grace Koper assisted on 16 kills apiece.
"Alex and Sam had terrific offensive nights," Freeburg added. "This week we've been focusing on staying humble, staying present and trusting the process and we did a great job displaying those qualities tonight."
UAB started out the match taking eight of the first 11 points to force a Georgia Southern (3-1) timeout. The Eagles fought back to get within four points, but the Blazers sealed the set one win 25-20 on a kill by Gomez.
Seventeen kills, three blocks and two aces powered the Green and Gold to a 25-16 set two win.
The Blazers continued to stay on top, jumping out to a 6-2 lead in the third set. A Georgia Southern four-point run tied the set at six. Kells closed out the three-set victory on a solo block to take the third and final set 25-14.
"We look forward to doing it again Sunday against a well-coached Kennesaw State team that we know will come out and compete hard," Freeburg added.
Up next, UAB takes on Kennesaw State in Bartow Arena on Sept. 5 at 2 p.m. for the final match of the Blazer Invitational. Single match tickets can be purchased by clicking here.
Due to the recent surge of COVID-19 and updated CDC guidance, UAB will require face masks indoors on campus – regardless of vaccine status – effective Thursday, July 29. Individuals can briefly unmask while actively eating or drinking.
