BIRMINGHAM -- The UAB men's soccer team tallied a late goal from the penalty spot in a 3-1 setback to Memphis on Saturday night at BBVA Field.
Senior forward Nathaniel St. Louis registered his team-high third goal of the season after the Blazers earned a penalty kick with less than two minutes remaining in the match. St. Louis confidently strided to the spot before burying a right-footed finish into the bottom-right corner of the goal.
Memphis (1-3-1) carried a 2-0 lead into halftime after an own goal by the Blazers and a finish from Maximillian Galizzi in the 41st minute. The Tigers went ahead 1-0 in the 34th minute after a defensive header from the Blazers landed in the back of their own net. Memphis tallied the opening goal after earning a corner kick.
Memphis extended its lead to 3-0 in the second half when Jovan Prado finished off Jose Ojeda's cross on a counter attack. St. Louis' strike from the penalty spot then pushed the score line to its final margin.
Less than a minute after the Blazers scored, St. Louis drove into the box once again before Memphis goalkeeper Parker Lackland denied the UAB forward of his first-career brace. St. Louis also almost put the Blazers ahead in the 21st minute, having his right-footed shot from the left side of the box hit square off the crossbar.
St. Louis paced the Blazers with four shots and three shots on goal. Senior forward Brooks Rice tallied three shots and a shot on goal in Saturday's match.
The Blazers will return to the pitch on Saturday with a road matchup at Gardner-Webb. Saturday's match in Boiling Springs, North Carolina, is scheduled to kick off at 3 p.m. CST.
