UAB Volleyball Opens 2021 Season at Troy Tournament

BIRMINGHAM — The UAB volleyball team opens up its 2021 season at the Troy Tournament in Troy, Ala. In the tournament the Blazers will face Ole Miss on Aug. 28 at 4 p.m. and host institution Troy on Aug. 29 at 2 p.m.

SEASON OUTLOOK
UAB looks to build off a successful 2020-21 season. The Blazers return all six starters plus libero, while welcoming four newcomers. 2020 First Team All-Conference USA and AVCA All-South Region honoree Fernanda Maida looks to build off her momentum from last season after being named to the Conference USA Preseason Team on Tuesday.
Two more 2020 All-Conference selections return in outside hitter Alex Kells (Second Team) and defensive specialist/libero Erin Powers (All-Freshman). As a team, the Blazers were second in the conference in service aces per set (1.55) and reached the C-USA Championship for the first time since 2013.
SCOUTING THE REBELS
Ole Miss welcomes back six starters from the 2020 squad. The Rebels had an SEC-only schedule during the 2020-21 season, which saw eight matches against AVCA top-15 opponents.
Outside hitter Anna Bair led the team with 182 kills and 2.60 kills per set last season. Gabby Easton returns after leading the Rebels with 597 assists and 8.91 assists per set, which was second in the SEC.
SCOUTING THE TROJANS
Troy is coming off a 2020-21 season that saw primarily Sun Belt Conference matches and an appearance in the SBC Tournament semifinal.
Setter Amara Anderson and outside hitter Cheyenne Hayes were named to the 2021 SBC Preseason Team following All-Conference honors in 2020. In addition, the Trojans were selected to finish second in the Sun Belt East Division.
