SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Freshman Khavish Varadan carded a one over 71 to lead UAB's efforts in the second round of the NCAA National Championship on Saturday at Grayhawk Golf Club.
Varadan's +1 moved him up 34 spots in the second round and he is now tied for 71st overall entering Sunday's third round at +6. Varadan's round was highlighted by tallying birdies on three of his final six holes to propel him up the leaderboard.
William Walker III was +3 in the second round and he is pacing UAB on the leaderboard at +5 overall, which has him tied for 55th.
As a team, UAB enters round three in 26th place overall at +32. Following round three, the field will be cut from 30 teams to 15, and a strong round on Sunday will keep UAB in contention of making the cut as the leaderboard continues to be jumbled in the middle.
Arkansas and Texas Tech are currently tied for 14th at +20, as UAB will have to close a 12-shot gap for an opportunity to advance to Monday's final round of stroke play.
Oklahoma State is leading the field at -6, while Oklahoma is the only other team under par at -1. Arizona State (+2), Pepperdine (+5) and Illinois/North Carolina (+6) round out the top five.
Individually, Bo Jin of Oklahoma State is leading the field at -8 and has a three shot lead entering round three.
UAB is paired with San Diego and East Tennessee State on Sunday and will tee off at 12:37 p.m. PST. Live stats can be found by clicking here, and updates are also available by following @UAB_MGOLF on Twitter and Instagram.
