SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The UAB men's golf team shot its low round of the tournament on Sunday en route to a 24th place finish at the NCAA National Championship this weekend at Grayhawk Golf Club.
The 24th place finish is the fifth best in school history for UAB. It was a record setting season for the Blazers which saw them earn the program's highest national ranking ever (No. 5), along with becoming just one of three teams in school history to win three tournaments in the same season.
"I am so proud of how our guys handled themselves the entire year," said head coach Mike Wilson. "To put together one of the best seasons in school history while battling the elements of a global pandemic shows how bought in and determined they were. This is a special group of guys and they should be proud of what they accomplished this year."
UAB finished at +45 overall on a course that saw only one team shoot under par throughout the first 54 holes of play. The Blazers, who came in seeded 26th, defeated higher ranked teams such as No. 5 Texas, No. 19 San Francisco and No. 25 San Diego State.
Freshman phenom Khavish Varadan paced the Blazers as he tied for 56th overall. Varadan shot 75-71-72 = 218 (+8) and moved up 15 spots in the final round.
Varadan turned it on down the stretch of the season by finishing second at the Conference USA Championship, 23rd at NCAA Regionals and 56th at NCAA Nationals.
Nick Robillard shot his low round of the tournament on Sunday with a 71, which moved him up 17 spots as he finished second for the Blazers in a tie for 97th at +12.
Redshirt senior William Walker III, one of UAB's most decorated golfers in school history, placed 102nd (+13), while fellow redshirt senior Drew Mathers was one shot behind at +14 as he tied for 109th. Sophomore Ethan Hagood rounded out the lineup in a tie for 144th.
The Blazers lose Walker III and Mathers to graduation, but will reload for 2021-22 around a nucleus of Robillard, Varadan, Hagood and John Snoddy.
The top 15 teams at Nationals have moved on to one more round of stroke play before the field is cut to eight for match play which will decide a national champion.
