BIRMINGHAM - UAB head volleyball coach Betsy Freeburg has announced the addition graduate transfer Sam Gomez to the roster.
Gomez, a 6-0 middle blocker, comes to the Magic City after playing the last four seasons at Southeastern Louisiana.
"We look forward to welcoming Sam to Birmingham after a great career at Southeastern Louisiana," Freeburg said. "When we first began recruiting Sam, the thing that stood out was her work ethic and we love how hard she plays and competes."
She led the Lions with 57 blocks and was third with 108 kills this past season. Gomez played in all of SLU's 16 matches, making 15 starts and recorded a career-high 19 kills against A&M-Corpus Christi. Her eight blocks against Tulane was the seventh-most single-match total in the Southland Conference and fourth-most in a four-set match.
"She is a physical player who could contribute in multiple positions," Freeburg added. "We are excited about both those intangible and tangible skills to our team."
The Mandeville, La. native led Southeastern Louisiana to a 13-5 record and a third-place finish in the Southland Conference in 2020-21.
For her career, Gomez has 643 kills and 205 blocks.
