SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – A pair of redshirt seniors in William Walker III and Drew Mathers led the way for the UAB men's golf team in the opening round of the NCAA National Championship on Friday at Grayhawk Golf Club.
On the course which is a par 70, Walker III shot a two over 72, while Mathers carded a three over 73.
A birdie on 15 moved walker to even par, but a double bogey on 16 moved him back to +2 and he would par the final two holes. Mathers was even through 10, but a bogey on 11 and a double on 12 brought him to three over. He recovered nicely to par the final six holes and finished at +3.
UAB's other three golfers in Ethan Hagood, Nick Robillard and Khavish Varadan all carded a five over 75.
UAB (+15) is currently in 28th place with 36 holes remaining before the field is cut to the top 15. However, the Blazers are in striking distance of a majority of the field.
With the first round still in action (and not to be completed until late tonight), Texas Tech is currently the leader in the clubhouse at -4.
The Blazers will once again be paired with Oregon State and TCU on Saturday and don't tee off until 12:47 p.m. PST/2:47 CST.
