Massa Captures Gold in Pole Vault on Day Three of Conference USA Championships

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Anna Massa captured gold in the pole vault for the UAB women's track and field team on Saturday in the third day of the Conference USA Championships.
Massa recorded a PR of 4.13-meters, finishing first in a field of 18. The junior's mark qualifies her for the NCAA East Perlims on Thursday, May 27 in Jacksonville, Fla. The event win earned the Blazers 10 team points.
"Overall we had a good day," head coach Kurt Thomas said. "Anna put together a huge series of jumps to win the pole vault. That was a crowning achievement."
In the 100m hurdle preliminaries, Makiyah Sills place second and recorded a personal-best time of 13.87. Brittany Floyd was eighth with a time of 14.34. Both will advance to the finals tomorrow at 4:35 p.m.
"Brittany had a tough long jump but came back to make the finals in the hurdles," Thomas added.
Karri Green's PR of 54.36 in the 400m preliminaries qualified her for tomorrow's finals that begin tomorrow at 4:50 p.m. Green's qualifying time was third overall.
Alayah Dozier quailed for the finals in the 100m after a PR of 11.89. She was tied for sixth in a 24-woman field. Tomorrow's race starts at 5:05 p.m. Dozier also qualified for the finals in the 200m after she ran a 24.14, finishing in fourth. Tomorrow's finals begins at 5:50 p.m.
In the 400m hurdles, Lisa Petkov's time of 1:00.93 qualified her the finals tomorrow at 5:35 p.m. Petkov finished fourth of 15.
Freshman Karlien Both had a personal-best throw of 40.83-meters to place 13th in the event. Agok Ayuen had a personal-best time of 2:15.29 in the 800-meters for a 12th-place finish.
After the third day of events, the Blazers sit seventh in the team competition with 18 points. Rice leads the way with 62.5 points.
"We have lots of points to go after tomorrow, so we have to keep working," Thomas added.
Championship Sunday starts at 1 p.m. with the shot put and the 4x400-meter relay concludes the meet at 6:50 p.m.
