MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Brittany Floyd claimed silver in the heptathlon as the UAB track and field team completed the second day of the Conference USA Outdoor Championships.
"The team battled today and came away with a lot of PRs," head coach Kurt Thomas said. "Birthe (Franck-Petersen) started the day with a school record and was so close to making the finals. Brittany had a good heptathlon to earn a silver medal and eight big team points."
Floyd finished with 5256 points in the event. The senior had three third-place finishes in the long jump (5.74-meters), javelin (33.07-meters) and 800-meters (2:24.84) on her way to a second-place finish.
Freshman Laney Kronz (4123) and sophomore Laci Turner (4099) placed 11th and 12th, respectively, in the heptathlon, which were personal-bests for both.
In the hammer throw, Birthe Franck-Petersen set a program record with her mark of 49.90-meters to place 10th overall.
In the 10,000-meters, Laura Thompson placed 18th with a personal-best time of 38:52.03. Thompson edged out her previous best time by over a minute.
After the conclusion of the second day, the Blazers are fifth in the team competition with eight points. Rice leads the way with 32 team points. Charlotte (27), UTSA (15), Southern Miss (10) and UAB round out the top-five.
"We are proud of what they accomplished today and look forward to the next two days," Thomas added.
Day three of the Conference USA Outdoor Championship is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. with the discus finals. Running events start at 3:30 p.m. with the 1500-meter prelims.
