UAB Baseball Edged Out by Marshall in Series Opener

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The UAB baseball team fell to Marshall, 8-6, on Friday afternoon at the Kennedy Center.
Left-handed pitcher Sam Brace tossed a career-high four innings four innings for the Blazers, only allowing one hit.
Marshall (9-33, 5-24 C-USA) got on the board early with a run in the first, two in the second and three in the third to take the 6-0 lead.
UAB (16-34, 9-20 C-USA) answered in the top of the fourth on a solo home run to left center by Ian Ladner, his fourth of the season.
The Thundering Herd added two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Jess Davis led off the fifth with a double down the right field line. After advancing to third on a groundout, he was driven in on a groundout by Zack Davis.
In the sixth, Caleb Floyd singled with one out and was followed by a John Marc Mullins walk. Thomas Johns came in to pinch-hit and sent a three-run home run to center to bring the Blazers within three, 8-5.
Floyd also sent the ball over the wall in the top of the eighth, bringing the score to the eventually final tally of 8-6. The solo shot was Floyd's fourth home run of the season.
The series continues with a doubleheader on Saturday at the Kennedy Center YMCA. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m. ET.
