STARKVILLE, Miss. – The UAB track and field team finished the Mississippi State Maroon & White Invitational on Saturday afternoon, coming away with two event victories, two top-five finishes and eight personal bests.
"The team competed well this weekend," head coach Kurt Thomas said. "Coming off finals and graduation, there is a lot of stress and fatigue this week. Everybody worked and competed hard despite that and we came away with some good things."
In the pole vault, Anna Massa placed second with a PR jump of 4.08m, which was the best mark for a Blazer since 2012 and moved her ahead of Toni Hawkins into second place on the all-time record list. Julianne Manning followed in sixth place with a PR of 3.53.
Zoria Miller's PR throw of 12.53 in the shot put was the best mark for a Blazer since 2014 and moved her ahead of Akira McSwain into second place on the all-time record list. Karlien Botha was two places behind Miller with a PR of 11.53.
Karri Green crossed first in the 400m with a time of 54.85 and Lisa Petkov won the 400m hurdles event in 1:00.17.
The 4x100 team of Makiyah Sills, Lisa Petkov, Ebony Tolliver and Alayah Dozier had a third-place finish with a time of 45.96.
Four more Blazers recorded PRs in Ayuen Agok (1500m/4:45.11), Maegan Edwards (100m hurdles/15.16), Jabriana Jemison (400m/57.49) and Imani Hanson (400m hurdles/1:03.68).
On Friday, Lauren Robinson won the 5000m with a time of 17:27.80 and Kaylie Wright was fifth overall in the long jump (5.86m).
"We need to rest and freshen up for the conference championship in two weeks," added Thomas.
UAB will travel to Murfreesboro, Tenn. for the 2021 Conference USA Outdoor Track and Field Championship beginning May 13. The four-day event will be hosted by Middle Tennessee.
