UAB Baseball Drops Series Opener to Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — The UAB baseball team fell to Southern Miss in the series opener on Friday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park, 7-2. The loss drops the Blazers to 10-17, 3-6 CUSA and the Golden Eagles move to 18-9, 5-3 CUSA.

Zack Davis led UAB at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Freshman Chandler Simpson recorded his 11th stolen base of the season, in addition to a base hit.

Southern Miss opened up the scoring in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs. In the fourth, Reed Trimble hit a two-run home run. The Golden Eagles added a run in the fifth for the 6-0 advantage.

Simpson singled to right field in the sixth and advanced to second on a stolen base. Z. Davis recorded a single to score Simpson for the first run for the Blazers. Ian Ladner and John Marc Mullins hit back-to-back singles to drive in the second run and cut the lead to four, 6-2.

USM added an insurance run in the eighth when Charlie Fischer hit a sacrifice fly to score Gabe Montenegro, putting the Golden Eagles up by the final score of 7-2.

The series continues Saturday with a 2 p.m. doubleheader. Both games will be streamed through CUSA.tv and stats are available on Statbroadcast.
