UAB Baseball Opens UTSA Series with 4-2 Win

BIRMINGHAM — Behind an outstanding performance from Riley Davis, the UAB baseball team won the series opener over UTSA, 4-2, on Friday night at Young Memorial Field.
R. Davis (4-3) got the start and tossed a career-high eight innings with eight strikeouts for his fourth win of the season. Brady Greene came in during the ninth and got the final three outs to earn his second save on the year.
Pate Fullerton led the Blazers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Colton Schultz added two RBIs.
UTSA (17-18, 9-11 C-USA) opened the scoring in the second. Joshua Lamb led off with a single and advance to second on a stolen base. He was driven in when Jonathan Tapia singled up the middle for the 1-0 advantage.
UAB (14-28, 7-14 C-USA) answered with a run in the fourth. Jess Davis singled with one out and advanced to third on a stolen base and an error. Colton Schultz brought J. Davis home on a groundout to tie the game at one.
With one out in the sixth, P. Fullerton and Chandler Simpson hit back-to-back singles, J. Davis then drew a walk to load the bases. P. Fullerton scored on a sacrifice fly from Schultz for the 2-1 lead.
In the seventh, John Marc Mullins hit a two-out single and Darryl Buggs followed with a double to put runners at second and third. P. Fullerton had his second hit of the contest to bring in both baserunners to increase the lead to three, 4-1.
The Roadrunners got a run back in the eighth on back-to-back doubles by Shea Gutierrez and Griffin Paxton.
R. Davis came back out to start the ninth, but following a leadoff single, Greene came in and retired the final three batters for the 4-2 win.
The series continues with a doubleheader on Saturday at Young Memorial Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Fans, including Gold Card holders and students, will not be permitted to attend home baseball games played at Young Memorial Field. Attendees will be limited to the player pass list and limited premium spaces.
