UAB Opens Conference USA Basketball Championship against UTSA

BIRMINGHAM – The postseason has arrived for the UAB women's basketball team. The Blazers head to Frisco, Texas, for the 2021 Air Force Reserve Conference USA Basketball Championships.
UAB will face UTSA in the preliminary round of the single-elimination tournament on March 9 at 4:30 p.m. in The Star, the Dallas Cowboys' practice facility.
LAST TIME OUT
The Blazers (9-12, 3-10 C-USA) are coming off a 78-45 victory over Fort Valley State on March 5 to finish the regular season. Junior forward LaMiracle Sims recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 16 rebounds in the matchup.
Five UAB players scored in double figures against the Wildcats, led by Caitlynn Daniels who had a game-high 16 points.
ALL-CONFERENCE SELECTIONS
C-USA announced this morning that Daniels, Margaret Whitley and Zakyia Weathersby were selected to All-Conference teams.
Whitley and Weathersby were both named to the All-Conference Second Team, becoming the ninth and tenth players to be named to an all-conference team under head coach Randy Norton.
After a standout season, Daniels was named to the All-Freshmen Team, the first UAB freshman named to the team since 2017.
SCOUTING UTSA
The Roadrunners (2-17) have not played since Feb. 13 after having back-to-back series with Charlotte and UAB canceled as a result of COVID and injuries.
Mikayla Woods is the offensive leader for USTA, averaging 12 points, 6.2 boards and has tallied 51 steals. Woods also has the most defensive rebounds (72) on the team.
Emilie Baek is the team's biggest threat from behind the arc, hitting a team-high 30 3-pointers in 19 games.
