FRISCO, Texas – Zakyia Weathersby grabbed 20 rebounds in the UAB women's basketball team's 80-66 victory over UTSA in their first game of the 2021 C-USA Women's Basketball Championship on Tuesday night.
Weatherbys' 20 rebounds against the Roadrunners was just one board short of the C-USA Championship record of 21. With her 13 points, the senior notched her fourteenth double-double of the season.
Freshman Maddie Walsh paced the team with a career-high 14 points, hitting three 3-pointers and shooting 5-of-9 from the field.
Junior LaMiracle Sims, who is coming off her first career double-double, scored a career-high 12 points to go with six boards.
Sophomore Sam Mitchell was the fourth Blazer who scored in double-digits, tying Walsh with a game-high three 3-pointers, finishing with 13 points.
Margaret Whitley, who had 9 points in the matchup, set a new career-high with seven assists.
UAB's bench accounted for 31 of the team's 80 points.
The Blazers (10-12, 3-11 C-USA) jumped out to an early lead, with a 27-9 advantage after the first quarter and never let up.
As a team, UAB shot 39.1% (25-of-64) from the field and made 10-of-28 (35.7%) of their shots from behind the arc.
"Eight of the 12 active players on our roster have never been at The Star before," head coach Randy Norton said, "so to get that first win is really big for us."
The Blazers will have a quick turnaround when they face FAU (10-10, 8-8 C-USA) tomorrow at 2:30 CST on ESPN+. UAB did not face the Owls during the regular season.
