Despite Late Scoring Run, UAB Softball falls to Mercer, 6-5

ATHENS, Ga. – The UAB softball team fell to Mercer 6-5 in their final game of the Bulldog Classic on Sunday afternoon. Lilly Crowe led the team with a career-high three hits to go with two runs and one RBI.
The Blazers (8-9) finished the three-day tournament hosted by the University of Georgia 0-4, sustaining two losses to the No. 19 Bulldogs and two to Mercer.
The Bears (7-7) took control early in the matchup, plating one run in the top of the first off a wild pitch. It remained a 1-0 Bears advantage until the fourth inning, when Mercer scored three more runs, going up 4-0.
A Brooke Burback RBI single brought in Crowe in the bottom of the fourth, getting UAB on the board and cutting the lead to 4-1.
Mercer went up 5-1 in the fifth, before a two-run sixth inning for the Blazers made it just a 5-3 game.
The Bears tacked on an insurance run in the seventh.
The Blazers got one more offensive oppurtunity in the bottom of the seventh, and Jenna Olszewski took advantage. The Hoover, Ala. native hit her second triple in two games, scoring Makalah Mitchell.
Crowe earned an RBI in the next at bat, scoring Olszewski with a single to left field. Despite the late push, UAB ended the game one run short, 6-5.
Amy Woodham (0-5) pitched 3.1 innings, allowing six hits, three runs and striking out six batters in her start. Sarah Cespedes pitched one inning of relief, allowing three hits and two runs, one earned.
Sophie Golliver came in for Cespedes, throwing2.2 innings, allowing four hits and one run with three strikeouts.

The Blazers will host North Alabama in a 6 p.m. midweek matchup at Mary Bowers Field on March 10.
