BIRMINGHAM – Junior Forward LaMiracle Sims recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 16 rebounds to lead the UAB women's basketball team past Fort Valley State 78-45 in its regular season finale on Friday at Bartow Arena.
Sims also matched a career-high with 10 points and has now scored in double figures three times this season. Zakyia Weathersby added her 13th double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 boards, which marked the second time this season UAB has had two players with a double-double in the same game.
Freshman guard Caitlynn Daniels led five players in double figures with a game-high 16 points. Both Sam Mitchell and Margaret Whitley scored 12, along with 10 apiece from Sims and Weathersby.
"We are so thankful that we could find a game today," head coach Randy Norton said. "With UTSA having been hit with COVID last week, it would have been 17 days without a game for us heading into the conference tournament. Although we got off to a slow start, we couldn't have scripted this game any better. Nobody played heavy minutes, we had five players in double digits and everyone got some quality minutes."
UAB (9-12) never trailed in the game and outscored the Wildcats (6-5) by 25 in the second half. The Blazers were stout on the defensive end, holding Fort Valley State to just 21.9 percent shooting for the contest.
Daniels got off to a hot start, scoring seven of her 16 points in the first quarter as the Blazers led 18-14 after one. The Wildcats, though, came out firing in the second quarter and tied the game on three separate occasions, but a 7-1 UAB run to end the half gave the Blazers an eight point halftime advantage at 36-28.
It was all UAB from there as the Blazers outscored the Wildcats 42-17 in the second half, including 24-7 in the fourth quarter.
UAB dominated down low and held a 40-14 advantage in the paint, while also scoring 19 fast break points. The bench contributed 33 points in the victory as well.
The Blazers now turn their attention to postseason play as they head to Frisco, Texas next week for the Conference USA Tournament, scheduled for March 10-13 at The Star.
