BIRMINGHAM – The two-time defending Southern Conference champion and 18th-ranked UAB rifle team heads to Lexington, Va. for the 2021 SoCon Championships, set to take place this Saturday and Sunday.
"I am definitely looking forward to this year's conference championships," head coach Lori Goodwin said. "I think our team is ready to compete hard and put on a good showing."
UAB is set to take on a field that includes No. 17 North Georgia, No. 20 The Citadel, Georgia Southern, Wofford and host school VMI. The Blazers and Nighthawks sit atop the conference standings, as both squads boast a 6-1 record in the league.
The Blazers won their first conference title in 2019 when they posted an aggregate score of 4582 to defeat second-place finisher North Georgia (4571) by nine points. In 2020, the Green and Gold defended its conference title, winning its second consecutive crown with an aggregate score of 4539, just clipping North Georgia's 4535.
Junior Zoe Lum leads UAB in smallbore average this year at 571.167, while sophomore and last season's SoCon Freshman of the Year Amy Kohan paces the squad in air rifle average (583.833) and aggregate average (1154).
Kohan has led the Blazers in aggregate in all but one match this season, while Lum posted the top score on the team in January at Murray State.
As per Southern Conference policy, no fans will be allowed at Kilbourne Hall at VMI for the 2021 SoCon Rifle Championships.
Both days of the SoCon Championships are set to begin at 6:30 a.m. CST. Live results will be provided by VMI by clicking here. For more information about the championship event, click here.
