BIRMINGHAM – Coming off a 3-1 weekend to open the 2021 season, the UAB beach volleyball team return to the sand this Friday and Saturday, March 5-6, at the Horned Frog Challenge hosted by TCU.
UAB opens the tournament with No. 14 FIU and Southern Miss on Friday, and then plays Central Arkansas and No. 11 TCU on Saturday. All the matches aside from Central Arkansas are CCSA league contests.
The Blazers have two victories over nationally ranked opponents in program history and have two opportunities for more this weekend. TCU moved up three spots in the polls after going 3-1 to open the season, including three wins over ranked opponents (FIU, FAU and South Carolina). FIU went 1-3 at that same tournament and enters the Horned Frog Challenge at 3-3 overall.
"This weekend we have the opportunity to play two top 20 teams," head coach Terri Del Conte said. "This is exactly the direction we want the program to go. We have to play the best to become our best."
UAB is 0-6 against both TCU and FIU all-time. The Blazers and Southern Miss are meeting for just the second time with UAB leading 1-0, while this is the first ever contest between UAB and Central Arkansas.
Senior SalliAnne Napolitano was the only Blazer to go 4-0 last week at Tulane and is now two wins shy of cracking the top 10 for career victories at UAB. Napolitano has 33 career victories as a Blazer, which is the most of any active player on the roster.
Following the tournament at TCU, the Blazers host the third annual March to May in Gulf Shores, Ala., at the site of the NCAA National Championship which is played in May. UAB welcomes No. 1 LSU, No. 2 Florida State, No. 10 Grand Canyon, No. 11 TCU, No. 19 Georgia State and Tulane to this year's tournament.
