BIRMINGHAM – Former UAB pitcher Garrett Whitlock was named to the Boston Red Sox Opening Day roster, as announced by the team last week.
"Honestly, I am just so thankful to be able to play a kids' game for a living," Whitlock said. "I am so thankful to God for the opportunity to play in the big leagues."
The Snellville, Ga. native occupied the mound for the Blazers in 2016 and 2017. In his freshman season, Whitlock tossed 52 innings and tallied 46 strikeouts to go along with a 3.00 ERA on the season.
As a sophomore, he appeared in 17 games in the Green and Gold with seven starts. He pitched a total of 60.1 innings and was the Opening Day starter for the Blazers and allowed opposing batters to hit just .256 against him. In his 11 appearances at home in 2017, Whitlock posted a 1.46 ERA.
Whitlock was originally drafted by the New York Yankees organization in the 18th round of the 2017 MLB Draft. On his road to Boston, Whitlock has made stops with Yankees West (Rookie League), the Pulaski Yankees (Rookie League), the Tampa Tarpons (Low-A), the Charleston RiverDogs (High-A) and the Trenton Thunder (AA).
Whitlock and the Red Sox open the season on Thursday at Fenway Park against the Baltimore Orioles, with first pitch coming at 1:10 p.m.
UAB baseball returns to the diamond on Thursday as well, as the Blazers take on No. 17 Louisiana Tech at 6 p.m. in Ruston, La.
