UAB Baseball Splits with Middle Tennessee to Begin Conference Play

BIRMINGHAM — The UAB baseball team split its Conference USA opening day series against Middle Tennessee. The Blazers (8-12, 0-0 CUSA) took game one, 8-0, and Middle Tennessee (11-9, 1-1 CUSA) came away with game two, 11-9.
GAME ONE – UAB 8, MT 0
Riley Davis got the start for the Blazers and threw a complete game shutout. The shutout marked the first for UAB since current volunteer assistant Thomas Lowery thew one against Western Kentucky in 2017.
John Marc Mullins led the Blazers at the plate in game one, going 2-for-3 with a double and a two-run home run.
After two scoreless innings, UAB broke through in the third on a Darryl Buggs fielder's choice sacrifice bunt to score Mullins. Colton Schultz came up two batters later with a two-run single extend the lead, 3-0.
The Green and Gold plated five runs in the fifth, powered by Mullins' two-run shot to right field to take the series opener, 8-0.
GAME TWO – UAB 9, MT 11
The Blue Raiders jumped out to an 8-2 lead after two innings in the second game. In the top of the third, Middle Tennessee plated three runs on three hits for the 11-2 advantage. The home half of the inning saw the Blazers add three runs to cut the lead to six, 11-5.
UAB added a run in the fourth to make the game, 11-6. Zack Davis led off with a solo shot to right in the bottom of the fifth. Following two more hits and an error by Middle Tennessee, the Blazers cut the lead down to two.
Troy Cordrey and the defense held the Blue Raiders to one hit in the final two innings, but Middle Tennessee was able to do the same and close out game two, 11-9.

Fans, including Gold Card holders and students, will not be permitted to attend home baseball games played at Young Memorial Field. Attendees will be limited to the player pass list and limited premium spaces.
Attendees will be asked to practice social distancing and wear a mask at all times per state and county ordinance.
