BIRMINGHAM — The UAB baseball team fell in 10 innings to cross-town rival Samford at Regions Field on Tuesday night, 5-1.
The game saw a one-hour rain delay pre-game, pushing first pitch to 6:32 p.m. Following the delay, UAB (7-11, 0-0 CUSA) plated the first run in the second inning. Zack Davis doubled to leadoff and scored two batters later on a Darryl Buggs single for the lead, 1-0.
Samford (11-10, 3-0 SoCon) answered in the top of the third when Taylor Garris scored on an error to tie the contest at one.
Strong defense and pitching for both teams kept the score locked at one through nine innings.
In the top of the 10th, Max Pinto led off the inning on second base due to the international tie breaker rule. Tyler McManus singled up the middle to drive in two runs for the 3-1 lead. A single by Towns King drove in two additional runs for the 5-1 advantage.
In the bottom of the inning, Joseph Kiel was the baserunner to start off for the Blazers. Chase Isbell struck out the final three batters for his fourth save and the 5-1 extra-innings win.
Austin Bohannon got the start on the mound, working four innings with two strikeouts. Evan Ingram (0-2) picked up the loss, throwing 1.2 innings after entering in the top of the ninth. UAB was led at the plate by freshman Darryl Buggs, going 1-for-3 with an RBI.
The Blazers begin conference play hosting Middle Tennessee March 26-28. Game locations, live stats and streaming information for each game is available on the UAB baseball schedule page.
