Senior Day Sweep Secures C-USA Volleyball Championship Bid for Blazers

BIRMINGHAM — The UAB volleyball team secured a spot in the Conference USA Championship for the first time since 2013 with a three-set sweep of UTSA on senior day in Bartow Arena.
"What a Senior Day to remember," head coach Betsy Freeburg said. "On my first phone call with Abby (Carlile) in July, she told me no matter what, that she wanted to go to the conference tournament, and for the first time since 2013, we are doing just that. It's hard to imagine a better way to celebrate her."
UAB (8-6, 7-4 CUSA) posted its first win over UTSA (6-11, 4-7 CUSA) since 1994. Fernanda Maida, Alex Kells and Grace Koper all recorded double-doubles.
"We knew we had to give more effort defensively and to have four players with double-digit digs is a testament to how important it became to our team," Freeburg added.
The Blazers used a four-point run to jump ahead of UTSA in the first set and did not let go of the lead to win, 25-17.
The second and third set was close the entire way. The Green and Gold ended the second set on a 7-2 run on three attack errors by the Roadrunners.
Set three saw the most lead changes with seven and 15 ties. UTSA opened up with an 11-9 advantage, but UAB made a five-point run to go up, 15-12. Maida secured the match point with her 15th kill, 25-22.
"Today we were very focused and disciplined in following the game plan, and it paid off with a great win for our program. We're looking forward to another great effort tomorrow with an opportunity to finish out the regular conference season at home," Freeburg added.
The series will conclude Monday at 11:30 a.m. at Bartow Arena. Live stats and streaming information can be found on the UAB volleyball schedule page.
MONDAY TICKET INFORMATION
Online ticket sales will be unavailable on Monday, March 22 due to scheduled maintenance. Fans can purchase tickets for Monday's match at the UAB Athletics Ticket Office beginning at 9 a.m. Tickets purchased the day of the match will be cash only.
Volleyball season tickets are on sale by purchasing the 2020-21 Gold Card for $65 here. The Gold Card is an exclusive offer that grants you admission into all UAB men's and women's soccer, volleyball, women's basketball and softball events for the upcoming academic year.
