BIRMINGHAM – Amy Woodham earned her first victory of the season in the circle with five strikeouts on Thursday night, helping lift UAB past Ball State, 6-3, to open the Blazer Classic at Mary Bowers Field.
Olivia Valbak earned her second straight save, entering the game in the top of the sixth inning and striking out three of the five batters she faced.
KK Crocker had a team-high two runs and one RBI against the Cardinals.
Jenna Olszewski got the Blazers (10-9) going with a leadoff single in the bottom of the first, followed by Crocker, who singled and then advanced to second base on an error. After Sierra Frazier was hit by a pitch, the bases were loaded with no outs.
Ball State (5-6) then walked the next two UAB batters, plating two runs. The Blazers, who were walked once more in the inning, scored one more run, going up 3-0 after the first.
Two more errors in the second inning by the Cardinals put UAB ahead 5-0.
After trading zeros in the third and fourth innings, a Sam Bean RBI groundout scored pinch runner Lilly Crowe, giving the Blazers a six-run advantage in the fifth.
The Cardinal bats got hot in the sixth, scoring three runs off three hits and an error by UAB, cutting the lead to 6-3.
However, a 1-2-3 inning from Valbak in the top of seventh inning sealed the UAB victory.
Up next, the Blazers will face both Samford and Southern Illinois tomorrow at 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., respectively, on the second day of the Blazer Classic.
