BIRMINGHAM – The UAB beach volleyball team concluded the Green Wave Invitational with a pair of 5-0 victories over New Orleans and Southeastern Louisiana on Saturday in New Orleans.
The Blazers finished the opening weekend of the 2021 season with a 3-1 record and tallied sweeps in three of their four matches.
"It was a great experience being able to come out of the gates and apply our training to opening weekend," head coach Terri Del Conte said. "Now we get to keep growing through the competition experience and continue to focus on the process."
The Blazers began each match on Saturday with a 1-0 lead as both New Orleans and SLU forfeited court five.
In the first match with UNO, two of the four courts went to three sets with UAB coming out victorious in both. After taking the first set 21-16, Rachel Tam and Mikayla Law-Heese dropped set two 23-21, but ran away with the third set 15-7.
UNO took the first set from SalliAnne Napolitano and Sarah Dickson 21-17 on court four, but the Blazers rallied to win the second 21-15 and then took a very closely contested third set 15-13.
In the match against the Lions, UAB went three sets on courts one and two, and won both of the third sets by two points. Tam and Law-Heese were successful in the third set 15-13, while Dylynn Otte and Jenna Gathright won 17-15 to secure the 5-0 sweep.
UAB will face its first nationally ranked opponents next week in Fort Worth with matches against No. 13 FIU and No. 15 TCU. The Blazers will also face Southern Miss and Central Arkansas while in Texas.
