Blazers Go 2-0 On Second Day of UAB Softball Invite

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB softball team went 2-0 on the second day of the UAB Softball Invite, with an 8-0 run-rule win over Eastern Illinois and a 7-1 win versus Nicholls State on Saturday at Mary Bowers Field.
The Blazers (7-5) combined for 15 runs and 15 hits in the two games.
Parker Conrad and Jaycee Cook both earned their second wins of the season in the circle, while Jenna Olszewski finished with a team-high five hits on the day.
UAB is now 3-0 in the tournament and have outscored their opponents 18-2 in its three victories.
GAME ONE: UAB 8, EASTERN ILLINOIS: 0 (5)
The Blazers opened their first game with hot bats, plating two runners in the first, KK Crocker and Analyse Petree, courtesy of two RBIs from Sam Bean.
UAB held its 2-0 advantage over Eastern Illinois until the Blazers bats exploded with a four-run inning in the bottom of the fourth.
Sierra Frazier got the Blazers going in the inning with a single to center, and Makalah Mitchell, who came in to pinch run for Frazier, immediately stole second base upon entering the game.
A groundout from Bean and a RBI groundout from Faith Hegh drove Mitchell home. Two Panther errors helped score Brooke Burback and Olivia Valbak and a Jenna Olszewski RBI single sent Jolie Readeaux home. The Blazers finished the fourth up 6-0.
Frazier and Bean each scored in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.
Bean and Olszewski each had a team-high two RBIs against the Panthers, and Jaycee Cook, who pitched four innings, allowed just one hit, and struck out four.
GAME TWO: UAB 7, NICHOLLS STATE 1
UAB's bats stayed hot in its second game of the day.
The Blazers got on the board first in the bottom of the second when Faith Hegh scored on sac fly from Olivia Valbak, going up 1-0 over the Colonials.
UAB added to its lead in the bottom of the fifth, plating Makalah Mitchell, Jolie Readeaux and Jenna Olszewski, before a solo homerun from Sierra Frazier put the Blazers up 5-0.
In the bottom of the sixth, Sadie Frazier, pinch hitting for KK Crocker, singled with the bases loaded that scored Lilly Crowe and Brooke Burback.
Nicholls State got its only run of the game in the top of the seventh.
In her second start in two days, Parker Conrad went five innings, allowing two hits and striking out five.
"Today was much improved by our offense and for us overall as a team," head coach Joe Guthrie said. "We still need to have a better awareness of momentum and find the ability to adjust faster. Tomorrow is championship Sunday, and we'll need our best effort."
UAB will conclude the UAB Softball Invite tomorrow with a 12:30 p.m. matchup against Alabama State.
