BIRMINGHAM - Makiyah Sills took home the conference title in the 60m hurdles as the UAB track and field team wrapped up competition at the Conference USA Indoor Championships on Sunday at the Birmingham Crossplex.
The team's fifth-place finish is the highest placement for the Blazers at the C-USA Indoor Championships since they finished in third in 2014. The Green and Gold also completed the weekend with five podium finishes.
"We had a fantastic weekend," head coach Kurt Thomas said. "The easy highlights are two C-USA Champs in Brittany (Floyd) and Makiyah, three more podium finishes for Lisa, Alicia and the 4x4. But what's really special is that we had so many ladies score in so many events and contribute to the total team effort."
Nia Hill opened the day with a personal best in the high jump, finishing in a tie for sixth place with a mark of 1.64 meters. Her score is also good for the sixth-best high jump number in program history.
Sills then posted a personal record 8.53 in the 60 meter hurdles race, a time that placed her in third all-time in Blazer history. The sophomore's league title marked the second event win for the Green and Gold at this year's championships after Floyd claimed victory in the pentathlon on Saturday.
In the 400 meter dash, Lisa Petkov finished on the podium for the Blazers. The senior from Germany posted a 55.71 time to take home bronze and set a personal best, while fellow Blazer Karri Green placed just behind in fourth with a time of 56.01.
The 800 meter saw Alicia Abalos Cervera finish with a time of 2:14.66, another UAB personal best, as she also found herself on the podium with a second-place honor.
Alayah Dozier placed seventh in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.29 to conclude UAB's individual running events for the day.
In shot put, Rosalind Staie set a personal record with a mark of 12.84 meters to finish in seventh, while Birthe Franck-Petersen placed right behind in eighth with a mark of 12.75 meters. Both scores are within the top five in program history for the event.
In the final event of the day, the 4x400 meter, UAB's foursome of Green, Ebony Tolliver, Lovisa Skoglund and Petkov came in second and took home silver with a time of 3:47.74, getting clipped by Charlotte (3:47.56) down the home stretch.
"Coach (Jordon) Andreassen has done a great job with her group," Thomas said. "Our staff knew this team could be special and they all stepped up and earned everything they accomplished today. We couldn't be more proud"
