Floyd Wins Pentathlon on Day One of C-USA Championships

BIRMINGHAM — Brittany Floyd took home the gold in the pentathlon on day one of the Conference USA Indoor Championship on Saturday at the Birmingham CrossPlex. The Blazers had five athletes qualify for running event finals tomorrow.
"We had a very good day one of the championship," head coach Kurt Thomas said. "The whole team stepped up and competed so well and it showed."
In the pentathlon, Floyd placed first in the 800-meter and long jump, second in the 60-meter hurdles and shot put and fifth in the high jump to total an indoor school record 3784. Laney Kronz set a personal record in all pentathlon events and overall point total.
Floyd also finished seventh in the long jump to total 12 of the Blazers' 20 team points. Freshman Kaylie Wright had a personal best mark of 5.90 meters to place fourth to add five points to the team total.
Later in the day, Makiyah Sills had the fastest qualifying time in the 60-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 8.56. The mark also places her in third in the all-time indoor list.
Freshman Alayah Dozier qualified for the 200-meter finals with a time of 25.07. Lisa Petkov and Karri Green qualified for the 400-meter finals after finishing fourth and seventh respectively.
Alicia Abalos Cervera qualified for the finals in the 800-meters with the sixth fastest time, completing the event in 2:17.92.
"We have opportunities in the high jump, shot put and the 4x400 meter to score more points tomorrow," added Thomas.
