BIRMINGHAM – The UAB baseball team opens their season in one week. UABSports.com is concluding the 2021 position preview with the pitchers.
Right-Handed Pitchers
#1 | Darryl Buggs | Fr. | Stockbridge, Ga. | Heritage HS
An outfielder and right-handed pitcher, Buggs went 5-1 with 32 strikeouts as a senior in high school, while posting a 2.0 ERA. The 2020 signee, posted a .382 batting average in his final season at Heritage HS before coming to UAB. With runners in scoring position, Buggs hit .481 and batted .500 in the state playoffs.
#8 | Brady Greene | Jr. | Montgomery, Ala. | Jones County JC
Greene averaged just under one strikeout per inning in 2020, pitching 8.2 innings in nine appearances on the mound. A transfer from Jones County Junior College, Greene went 5-3 in 10 starts, picking up 29 strikeouts in 41.1 innings for the Bobcats in 2019.
#10 | Tanner Rusk | R-Jr. | West Point, Ala. | Wallace State CC
Rusk pitched 15.2 innings in the COVID-19-shortened season in 2020, finishing the season with a 4.02 ERA. A year prior, the West Point, Ala. native pitched 52 innings, tallying 37 strikeouts and completing the season with a 2-2 record.
#11 | Ian McWilliams | Jr. | Nashville, Tenn. | Beech HS
McWilliams appeared in two games in 2020's shortened season. In 2019, the Nashville native took the mound four times, pitching 2.1 innings and giving up four base hits.
#17 | Austin Stump | R-Jr. | Puyallup, Wash. | Tacoma CC
A transfer from Tacoma CC prior to the 2019 season, Stump posted a 3.42 ERA in 21 games in his first season in the Green and Gold. Stump went 1-0 in 2020, appearing in four contests.
#24 | Troy Cordrey | R-So. | Helena, Ala. | Helena HS
Cordrey pitched in five appearances in 2020, a year after not seeing the field due to injury. As a freshman in 2018, Cordrey carried the lowest ERA of freshmen on staff and finished the season with a 2-1 record.
#26 | Jordan Bonk | Jr. | Victoria, Minn. | Iowa Western CC
A junior who transferred to UAB from Iowa Western CC prior to last season, Bonk pitched nine innings in his inaugural season in Birmingham, completing the season at 1-2. At Iowa Western, he posted a 3.36 ERA over two seasons, going 9-0 and helping lead the team to two NJCAA World Series appearances in 2018 and 2019.
#29 | Jonah Smith | R-Fr. | Sweetwater, Ala. | Sweetwater HS
Smith appeared in seven games in 2020, pitching 8.1 innings and striking out nine batters. Opposing batters hit just .273 against Smith, the sixth lowest OBA on the squad.
#31 | Riley Davis | Jr. | Helena, Ala. | Helena HS
Davis appeared in two games in 2020, starting both contests. He tossed a total of 13 innings, striking out six and finished the season with decisions in both games, ending the season 1-1. In 2019, Davis started six games in 20 appearances and earned the second-most wins on the team (4), while striking out 39 batters over 52.1 innings.
#36 | Tyler O'Clair | So. | Calera, Ala. | Calera HS
The local product out of Calera started on the mound in four games, tacking on an additional relief appearance as well in 2020. Pitched 19 total innings with 10 strikeouts en route to finishing the season with a 5.21 ERA. In 2019, O'Clair tallied a win and a save in nine appearances while starting three games for the Green and Gold.
#38 | Nick Wright | Fr. | Mandeville, La. | St. Paul's HS
A true freshman, Wright earned First Team All-District accolades in his senior season of high school while maintaining a 2.83 ERA. He helped lead St. Paul's to the Louisiana 5A state championship as well. He was named a Perfect Game 2019 All-American in the summer of 2019 when he posted a 1.97 ERA.
#40 | Matthew Reed | So. | Germantown, Tenn. | Houston HS
Reed pitched 5.1 innings in 2020, his first season on the Southside. He appeared in 4 contests, all relief appearances, and wrapped up the year with a 5.06 ERA with no decisions.
#42 | Tyler Bell | Fr. | Mobile, Ala. | Baker HS
Bell struck out 31 opposing hitters in 30.2 innings on the mound in high school in 2019. Opponents reached base via hits just 20 times, with Bell allowing an OBA of just .178.
#44 | Collin Taylor | Jr. | Florence, Ala. | Arkansas
A transfer from Arkansas, Taylor made seven appearances for the Razorbacks as a freshman in 2019. He pitched 6.2 innings with a 4.05 ERA and never gave up more than two runs in an outing. Taylor did not appear in a game as a sophomore in 2020.
#50 | Evan Ingram | Grad. | Vestavia Hills, Ala. | Hendrix College
A native of the Birmingham suburb of Vestavia Hills, Ingram played four years at Hendrix College in Conway, Ark before returning home. Ingram started 30 games over four years for the Warriors, going 11-12, while striking out 108 batters.
Left-Handed Pitchers
#12 | Austin Bohannon | Sr. | Russellville, Ala. | Shelton State CC
Bohannon led all Blazer starting pitchers in ERA last season (2.66), while starting five games. He pitched 20.1 innings, tallying nine strikeouts and allowing an OBA of just .203. In 2019, Bohannon started four games and appeared in relief 12 times for a total of 27.2 innings of work.
#14 | Cameron Furr | Jr. | Trussville, Ala. | Snead State CC
A transfer from Snead State CC in Boaz, Ala., Furr tied for most wins in the Alabama Community College Conference over his time with the Parsons. Furr ranks eighth in ERA and 10th in strikeouts in ACCC history and struck out 60 in 61.2 innings of work as a sophomore.
#20 | Dylan Cunningham | Jr. | Albany, La. | Coastal Alabama CC
Cunningham transferred to UAB prior to the 2020 season and posted a 4.70 ERA and a 1-0 record in his opening season as a Blazer. He appeared in relief in nine games last year, working 7.2 innings with seven strikeouts and giving up just one extra base hit.
#34 | Blake Petty | So. | Leeds, Ala. | Walters State CC
A transfer from Walters State CC in Morristown, Tenn., Petty posted an ERA of 3.83 with 41 strikeouts in 38 innings during his time as a Senator. He helped lead the team to a 112-17 record in his two seasons at Walters State.
#37 | Carson Knight | Fr. | Muscle Shoals, Ala. | Muscle Shoals HS
Knight went 92 during his final full high school season at Muscle Shoals. He struck out 75 batters in just 45 innings of work and posted a 2.70 ERA to end the year. Knight was a selection for the annual North-South All-Star Game in Montgomery, Ala. following that season.
#45 | Sam Brace | Gr. | Metamora, Ill. | Lawrence Tech
Brace made 16 appearance at for the Blue Devils in two seasons. During the shortened 2020 season, Brace recorded 12.0 innings pitched with eight strikeouts.

Fans, including Gold Card holders and students, will not be permitted to attend home baseball games played at Young Memorial Field. Attendees will be limited to the player pass list and limited premium spaces.

Regions Field will accommodate fans, including Gold Card holders and students, with social distancing measures in place.
