UAB Rifle Tops VMI For Second Straight First-Place Finish

LEXINGTON, Va. – The UAB rifle team earned a first-place score of 4,562 to notch its second straight victory in Saturday's match at VMI.
The Blazers defeated the VMI mixed team and the VMI women's team to finish first out of three competing teams. UAB's team score of 2,253 in the smallbore marked a season high, outscoring VMI by 36 and the VMI women's team by 45. The Blazers also recorded a score of 2,309 in the air rifle, which was also a season best.
Maggie Vonderau, Sophia Flores and Amy Kohan swept the top three individual marks for the Blazers, recording scores of 1,148, 1,142 and 1,140, respectively. Vonderau's tally of 569 in the smallbore was a match high, while her score of 579 in the air rifle ranked fourth overall.
Flores, who has topped the Blazers twice in air rifle and once in smallbore this season, posted a second-place score of 566 in the smallbore and fifth-place mark of 576 in the air rifle. Kohan rounded out the top three with a fourth-place finish in the smallbore and second-place mark in the air rifle.
Jordan Blankenship also earned a spot in the top five with an aggregate score of 1,132, which ranked as her highest score of the 2021-22 season so far.
The VMI mixed team finished second with an aggregate team score of 4,527, while the VMI women's team placed third with an aggregate score of 4,382.
UAB will close out its fall schedule on Saturday with a match at Jacksonville State. The Blazers will then open their spring slate on Jan. 21 at Murray State.
