10/5/2021 4:55:00 PM | Men's Soccer
BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's soccer team returns home for its final nonconference match of the 2021 season when the Blazers host FGCU on Wednesday. Kickoff for Wednesday's match at BBVA Field is set for 5 p.m.
After falling 3-1 to No. 10 Kentucky on Sunday, UAB will look to bounce back and earn its third nonconference victory of the season. The Blazers and Eagles have never faced each other in the respective programs' histories. FGCU is UAB's second of three opponents from Florida during the 2021 campaign.
UAB's match against FGCU will stream live on CUSA.tv. Fans will also be able to follow this weekend's matchup via live stats.
LAST TIME OUT
UAB kept pace with No. 10 Kentucky on the Wildcats' home turf until the 84th minute, which is when Kentucky netted a goal off a corner kick to extend its lead to a two-goal margin.
UAB goalkeeper Seth Torman shined in net for the Blazers, setting a new career-high with 11 saves. Nine of Torman's 11 stops came in the second half, keeping his team within striking distance until the final few minutes.
After Kentucky snatched a 1-0 lead just over two minutes into the match, Curtis DeLeon knotted the contest at 1-1 in the sixth minute with his second goal of the season. Curtis' brother, Shane DeLeon, dished out the primary assist, while Teodor Thorvaldsen earned the secondary assist with a cross from the left flank.
Senior Nathaniel St. Louis maintains the team lead in points (11), goals (five), assists (one), shots (18) and shots on goal (13). Curtis DeLeon's second goal of the season in Sunday's match now makes him one of four Blazers with multiple scores.
THE SERIES VS. FGCU
Wednesday's contest will be the first meeting between the two programs. The Blazers, however, are 2-0 against FGCU head coach Jesse Cormier, who previously coached at Vermont for 13 seasons. UAB knocked off Vermont 1-0 in 2009 before dominating the Catamounts 4-1 in 2014.
SCOUTING FGCU
FGCU holds a 1-6-1 record through eight matches this season, but four of the Eagles' six defeats have come by just a single goal. FGCU knocked off in-state Atlantic Sun foe Jacksonville 2-0 on Sept. 18, using a goal in each half to seal the home victory.
The Eagles have had a knack for playing aggressive, logging 117 fouls, 29 yellow cards and three red cards through eight matches.
Forward O'Vonte Mullings holds a sizable lead in multiple offensive categories, including points (10), goals (five), shots (20) and shots on goal (11).
Head coach Jesse Cormier enters his fifth season with the Eagles, previously leading Vermont to three NCAA Tournament appearances in 13 seasons with the Catamounts.
