BIRMINGHAM – Playing its final tournament of fall competition, the UAB men's golf team heads to Mobile this weekend, Oct. 30-31, for the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational hosted by the University of South Alabama at Steelwood Country Club.
The Blazers enter the weekend with an overall record of 25-4 after winning their first tournament of the season at the Graeme McDowell Invitational and finishing fifth at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate three weeks ago.
UAB's is one of 14 participating teams this weekend, along with Cincinnati, Kansas State, Kennesaw State, Kentucky, Louisiana Tech, Memphis, Mississippi State, Missouri, North Alabama, Rice, Rutgers, South Alabama and Wisconsin.
The Blazers will field a lineup consisting of senior Nick Robillard, juniors Alfie Fox, Ethan Hagood and John Snoddy, and freshman Paul Bruce.
UAB is without one of its top golfers as sophomore Khavish Varadan is participating in the Asia-Pacific Amateur in Dubai. If Varadan wins the tournament, he would earn an automatic berth into next year's Masters Tournament.
Robillard has continued his momentum from last season in which he was named the Conference USA Golfer of the Year. Through two tournaments this year, Robillard carries a 68.5 stroke average and has finished second and fifth overall at -12 and -8, respectively.
"We are really looking forward to this weekend's event at Steelwood," head coach Matt Whall said. "We have the opportunity to give a younger player an opportunity and showcase the strength of the roster. I really believe in all of the guys and I'm excited to see how they carry themselves after a great couple of weeks work. They are prepared, relaxed and ready to compete. The event does a huge amount for local charities and it's a pleasure to be a part of."
The field will play 36 holes on Saturday and 18 on Sunday. The course is par 72 that plays 7,096 yards.
