BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's soccer team fell 3-1 to Conference USA foe Florida Atlantic on Saturday night at BBVA Field.
The Blazers opened the scoring in Saturday's match with a goal from senior Brooks Rice. Rice, who ranks second on the team with four goals this season, netted a crafty solo goal after getting a ball played to him early down the right channel. Rice was able to make a few FAU defenders miss before slotting home a right-footed shot past the keeper to make it 1-0 Blazers in the 22nd minute.
The Owls, however, responded instantly with a goal just 10 seconds after kicking off following Rice's opening goal. Alonso Coello Camarero played in a long ball right after kickoff to Pontus Steffensen, who buried an equalizer in the 23rd minute.
With the score tied at 1-1 at the half, UAB held a 9-5 advantage in shots and 4-0 edge in corner kicks. The Blazers carried their momentum from the first half into the early portion of the second stanza, firing the first shot of the second half in 48th minute.
FAU's Ivan Mykhailenko scored the Owls' second and decisive goal in the 55th minute when Daniel Skistad played in a long ball to Blake Dean, who then delivered a cross in to Mykhailenko for the goal.
UAB came just inches away from an equalizer in the 73rd minute when senior Mason Robicheaux blasted a shot from just outside of the box. FAU goalkeeper Neil Strauber got just enough of Robicheaux's strike to tip the ball up onto the cross bar.
The Owls then stretched their lead to the final score line when Filip Jauk buried a penalty kick goal just over two minutes after Robicheaux's shot. The UAB senior once again hit the woodwork in the 80th minute.
UAB continues its stretch of six straight Conference USA matchups when the Blazers travel to Conway, South Carolina, for a contest at Coastal Carolina.
