UAB Heads To El Paso To Take On UTEP

BIRMINGHAM- Blazer Volleyball (8-10, 3-3) will travel to El Paso, Texas to take on UTEP (15-4, 4-2) on October 22, and October 23. Both matches will be played in Memorial Gym.

Weekend Preview
UAB is looking to get back on track after dropping two matches against North Texas last weekend. Fernanda Maida is 3rd in the nation in kills per set with 5.13, points per set with 5.69, and attacks per set with 13.56. Erin Powers is averaging 4.17 digs a set. UAB will look to complement Fernanda Maida's offense with the services of Alex Kells, who has 221 kills on the season. Lidya Canturk has 24 service aces.
Scouting UTEP
UTEP has hit well this year, with a hitting percentage above .250 in 13 matches, including eight above .301. The Miners are blocking with consistency and have tallied at least 10 blocks in nine matches this season. UTEP is currently ranked 1st in Conference USA in aces per set, (1.81) and 2nd in Conference USA in hitting percentage (0.273). "This weekend road trip will be a good test for our team." Said Coach Betsy Freeburg. "UTEP is a team that plays a very similar style of volleyball to us, so it should be a good match up. They are a very high RPI team who is continuing to build off the success they had in the spring, and they will be confident playing at home. We have been working hard this week on expanding our competitive muscle and look forward to putting it to work against a quality opponent on the road."
