UAB Comes Up Short Against North Texas
10/16/2021 7:05:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
BIRMINGHAM- UAB dropped to 8-10, 3-3 on the season after going down in four sets versus North Texas.
Fernanda Maida had 24 kills, and Alex Kells had 14. UAB recorded 14 service aces as a team, with Alex Kells getting five, to go with Lidya Canturk and Chloe Rodriguez each getting three. Erin Powers had as many digs as her jersey number, 24.
The first set was closely contested, with each team trading points in a back and forth affair that saw UAB nearly steal the set with a scoring run to tie the set at 24, but North Texas (13-8, 6-2) held on to win the set 26-24.
The second set went to UAB thanks to two impressive scoring runs, with one that saw the Blazers score five points to stretch their lead to 14-8, and another scoring flurry where the Blazers scored six in a row to go ahead 21-12, eventually taking the set 25-15.
The Mean Green regained control in the third set with some scoring runs of their own, and despite another UAB rally, UNT won the set 25-23.
The fourth set went down to the wire, with each team battling hard and scoring with authority. Down 20-16, the Blazers caught fire, and scored five points in a row to take the lead 21-20. UAB made some excellent plays, but North Texas came out on top in the end to win the set 27-25, and the match 3-1.
"Today's loss certainly stings." Said Coach Betsy Freeburg. "We competed much harder than we did last night which is something to be proud of, we just weren't tough enough late in sets when it mattered. There is still a lot of Conference USA volleyball to be played which is great because we still have yet to play our best of the season. We will get back in the gym Monday and start preparing for a tough road trip to face a UTEP team that is playing well especially at home. We have a good test ahead of us that will challenge us to be tough and play hard."
UAB Volleyball will travel to El Paso, Texas next weekend to face UTEP in two matches. The Blazers will play Friday, October 22 at 7 p.m., and Saturday, October 23 at 1 p.m.
Volleyball season tickets are available by purchasing the 2021-22 Gold Card for $65.
