Huge Final Round Helps Men’s Golf Finish Fifth at Bank of Tennessee

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's golf team saved their best round for last as the Blazers moved up five spots on the final 18 holes of the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate to finish fifth overall at the Blackthorn Club.
UAB's 275 was the second lowest round of any team in the tournament this week, and it moved the Blazers from tenth in the beginning of the round to fifth at the end.
"The guys really proved a point to themselves today and found some confidence heading into our back nine" head coach Matt Whall said. "Each man allowed themselves to play freely and in turn they started to execute the right shots at the right moments and then the confidence just builds. It was a lot of fun today and it is just so pleasing to see the guys having fun and competing."
Nick Robillard, Khavish Varadan and Alfie Fox led the charge on Tuesday as these three combined to shoot -13. Robillard carded his second-consecutive round of 67 (-5) and finished the tournament at in a tie for fifth place overall at -10 (72-67-67 = 206, -10).
Varadan and Fox each shot a four-under 68 in the final round. Varadan tied for ninth overall at -8 (70-70-68 = 208, -8) and has now shot under par in all six rounds so far this season.
Fox (70-73-68 = 211, -5) moved up 13 spots in the final round to notch his second-straight top 20 finish as he tied for 19th overall.
John Snoddy's even par on Tuesday was the team's fourth and final score that counted. Rounding out UAB's efforts was Ethan Hagood (73-73-74 = 220, +4) who finished in a tie for 62nd.
East Tennessee (-35) won the tournament and was followed by Charlotte (-29), Louisville (-29) Georgia Southern (-24) and UAB (-21).
The Blazers are back in action on Halloween weekend at the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational hosted by South Alabama, Oct. 30-31.
