Blazers Win Second Straight Over Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The UAB women's basketball team swept their two-game series against Southern Miss with an 84-65 victory on the road on Saturday night, earning the second conference win of the season.
Junior Margaret Whitley had a game-high 27 points, shooting 7 of 14 from the field and hitting four 3-pointers.
Senior Zakyia Weathersby notched her third straight double-double, her sixth of the season, with 10 points and 11 boards.
The Blazers (7-3, 2-2 C-USA) were efficient offensively to start the game, shooting 11 of 16 from the field and going 5-5 from range in the first quarter.
Whitley and freshman Lindsey Dullard were perfect from behind the arc, each hitting two apiece, helping UAB hold an 31-16 advantage over the Golden Eagles (2-4, 0-4 C-USA) going in the second.
In the second frame, both offenses stalled, with the two squads shooting a combined 10 of 33 from the field.
The quarter was highlighted for UAB by two 3-point baskets, one from Dullard and the other from Caitlynn Daniels. The Blazers went into the half up 14 with the score 43-31, despite a 12-point second quarter.
In the second half, the Blazers shot 50 percent (13 of 26) from the field and went 11 of 11 from the charity stripe. Whitley led all scorers with 14 points.
Dullard finished the game with 12 points and five rebounds, while Daniels scored 14 points and a tallied a career-high eight boards.
Overall, the Blazers shot 50.9 percent from the field (29 of 57), were a perfect 15 of 15 from the line and made 11 of 22 3-point baskets.
"I thought our girls showed great improvement from last week to this week," head coach Randy Norton said. "To be able to come in and win twice at Southern Miss has not been done very often. I still feel like our team will continue to get better each week and I'm excited about the future of this team because our best basketball is ahead of us."
UAB will now look to its next conference opponent, Charlotte, who it will host next weekend from Jan. 15-16 at Bartow Arena.
