Blazers Host Charlotte for Two-Game Series

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB women's basketball team will look to protect home court when they host Conference USA rival Charlotte for a two-game series on Friday and Saturday at Bartow Arena.
Both games will be played at 2:00 p.m. and streamed on C-USA TV.
UAB LATELY
The Blazers (7-3, 2-2 C-USA) are coming off a 2-0 weekend at Southern Miss on Jan. 8-9.
UAB posted 85 and then 84 points in the back-to-back matchups, its highest scoring games of the season.
Senior Zakyia Weathersby led all rebounders in both games and posted her fifth and sixth double-doubles of the season, the most currently in C-USA.
The Collins, Miss., native is also one of just 19 players in NCAA Division 1 that has recorded six or more double-doubles this season.
Caitlynn Daniels and Margaret Whitley led the UAB offense, with Daniels posting a career-high 21 points in game one and Whitley scoring a game-high 27 points in game two.
Freshman Lindsey Dullard played her first two collegiate games against the Golden Eagles. She combined for 20 points, 18 from behind the arc, to go with ten rebounds, three assists and two steals.
SCOUTING CHARLOTTE
The 49ers (3-4, 2-0 C-USA) are also coming off a 2-0 weekend. They swept conference opponent Marshall at home on Jan. 8 and 9.
Charlotte defeated The Herd by a combined 28 points in the series and earned its first overtime victory of the season in game two.
Junior Jada McMillian is Charlotte's leading scorer, averaging 34.4 points through the first seven games.
The 49ers lead C-USA in field goal percentage defense (23.9%) and are averaging 70.4 points
LEADING THE COUNTRY
Whitley not only leads Conference USA in free throw percentage and 3-pointers made, but the junior is also ranked in the top-15 of the NCAA Division 1 in four categories:
On Monday, Daniels was named the C-USA Freshman of the Week, the first weekly honor of her career.
She averaged 17.5 points per game and shot 57.1% from the field in the Southern Miss series.
Daniels, the only freshman in UAB's starting lineup this season, has made six starts and is averaging 10.5 points.
She ranks second among all active C-USA freshman in assists, racking up 35 in 10 games, and is No. 5 overall in the league in assist/turnover average (1.59).
REBOUNDING AND BLOCKING ABOUND
Weathersby is the league leader in rebounding. This season, she has racked up a total of 110 boards, 75 on defense and 35 on offense and averages 11 per game.
She has had 10 or more rebounds in seven games this season, putting her atop the league in the category.
The center also ranks in the NCAA Division 1 Top-20 in three categories:
UAB holds a 17-18 all-time series record against the 49'ers.
The two teams met last season on Jan. 2, 2020 at Bartow Arena. In the matchup, Charlotte edged out the Blazers 83-75, despite then-UAB senior Katelynn Thomas scoring a career-high 25 points.
Head coach Randy Norton holds a 4-4 record against the 49'ers.
