UAB Comes Up Short Against Charlotte

BIRMINGHAM– Despite a career-high 20-rebound and 20-point double-double from Zakyia Weathersby, UAB women's basketball fell to Charlotte 78-74 on Friday afternoon in Bartow Arena.
Weathersby is the first Blazer to record 20 rebounds in game since Jan. 28 2018, when then-UAB senior Kara Rawls racked up 20 at FIU.
The senior has now recorded four straight double-doubles and has a conference-high seven overall this season. She has totaled 130 rebounds through the first 11 games.
Junior Margaret Whitley led the team with 26 points, shooting 7-of-22 from the field, 3-of-10 from behind the arc and hitting all nine of her free throws. She has scored in double digits in every game this season for the Blazers.
UAB (7-4, 2-3 C-USA) went up 3-0 to open the game after a quick layup and free throw from junior Sara Rosenfeldt, before cooling off offensively.
In the first quarter, the Blazers shot 7-of-19 from the field and missed all four of its three-point attempts. Weathersby, who had a team-high six points, also racked up a game-high six rebounds in the frame.
After the first ten minutes of play, Charlotte (4-4, 3-0 C-USA) held a 23-15 advantage.
UAB scored just nine points in the second, matching its lowest-scoring quarter of the season.
Weathersby secured her double-double with a minute remaining in the half, the fastest she has notched one this season.
The Blazers went into the third quarter down 37-34, before scoring a season-high 31 points in the third.
Whitley, who had a team-high 12 points, made two 3-pointers and went 4-of-7 from the field, while Weathersby, Sam Mitchell and Lindsey Dullard each hit two field goals.
UAB shot 11-of-19 from the field in the quarter and went 6-of-8 from the line.
The two teams went into the final quarter tied at 55.
In a back-and-forth offensive quarter, the turning point came with 56 seconds remaining, a play after Mitchell hit a 3-point basket and tied the game at 74.
A UAB foul sent the 49ers to the line, where they made both of their shots. Already up 76-74, the game was sealed by Charlotte with a field goal with 13 second remaining.
The Blazers will look to even up the series with Charlotte tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. in Bartow Arena.
